Primary School

Welcome

At Kempsey Adventist School we understand that each child is uniquely created by God, and we endeavour to inspire students to utilise these God given gifts and talents.

Primary School education lays the foundation on which children can build their pathway into the future. Our Primary School staff are dedicated to inspiring students in their learning through our caring and nurturing environment. The implementation of high-quality learning opportunities and explicit teaching within Numeracy and Literacy lessons allows students to have a clear understanding of the fundamentals and opportunities for students to extend their knowledge and thrive.

Curriculum

Students in the primary school at Kempsey Adventist School (KAS) study the following subject areas.

The Encounter Bible curriculum is a Christ-centred program designed to nurture students’ personal relationship with Jesus and deepen their understanding of Scripture. Through a dynamic, story-based and inquiry-driven approach, Encounter encourages students to explore biblical truths, reflect on real-life applications, and engage meaningfully with God’s word. The curriculum fosters a learning environment where students from all backgrounds are invited to discover their place in God’s story, develop strong moral values, and grow spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually. At our school, Encounter is integral to shaping compassionate, thoughtful learners who are inspired to make a positive difference in their world.

English is delivered through a comprehensive literacy program that develops essential foundational skills, including phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, while fostering a lifelong love of reading and writing. Through evidence-based teaching practices and exposure to high-quality literature across diverse genres, students are able to build critical thinking, purposeful writing, and effective communication skills. Regular opportunities for reading, discussion, and presentation equip students with confidence and communication skills for success both in school and beyond.

Mathematics is taught through a balanced and structured program that integrates direct instruction, hands-on learning, and inquiry-based exploration. This approach develops essential numeracy skills, strengthens problem-solving strategies, and deepens students’ understanding of key mathematical concepts. By building confidence and proficiency in foundational mathematical skills, students become equipped to tackle increasingly complex challenges and develop the analytical thinking skills that can be applied more broadly.

Through engaging learning experiences in HSIE, students cultivate key foundational skills including research, critical thinking, and problem-solving. They explore the dynamic relationships between people, places, and environments, fostering a deeper understanding of historical, geographical and contemporary contexts. This approach encourages curiosity, promotes meaningful connections across time and cultures, and nurtures a well-rounded awareness of the world and their place within it.

In Science, students engage in learning to develop core skills in scientific investigation. They learn to pose questions, predict outcomes, conduct fair tests, and analyse results to draw evidence-based conclusions. Simultaneously, students build digital literacy, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving skills by exploring and applying a range of digital tools and technologies. This integrated approach fosters curiosity, encourages innovation, and supports the practical application of knowledge, preparing students to confidently participate in and contribute to a rapidly evolving technological world.

In the Primary years, our Creative Arts program provides students with vibrant opportunities to explore and express themselves through Visual Arts, Music, and Drama. Guided by a specialist teacher, students engage in hands-on, imaginative experiences that nurture artistic skills, build confidence, and encourage collaboration. Through creative expression and performance, they learn to communicate ideas, appreciate diverse artistic forms, and develop a lifelong connection to the arts as a powerful means of self-expression and shared understanding.

Our Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) program lays a strong foundation for students’ physical, social, and emotional wellbeing. Through playful and purposeful activities, students develop fundamental movement skills, coordination, and body awareness, while engaging in cooperative games that foster teamwork, communication, and fair play. Health and personal development lessons focus on safety, healthy habits, emotional regulation, and building positive relationships. This well-rounded program empowers students to make informed choices, manage challenges, and lead active, balanced lives.
